SEND

What is SEND - Special Educational needs and Disability?

SEND is a term used to describe the needs of a child who has a difficulty or disability which makes learning harder for them than for other children their age. This can include behaviour or the ability to socialise, the ability to understand things, concentration levels and physical needs or impairment.

In order for us to identify any extra needs of our children at Peter Pan, we operate a key person system which involves regular meetings between the key person and parents. We make general observations and complete a Progress check when the child is between 2 ½ and 3 years old. This is a short summary of the child’s development. If this identifies a significant concern the nursery SENCO- Miss Kat Tanner will work with the key person to develop a targeted plan to support the child’s development and learning.

We work with Surrey Early Years to help identify the provision required to support the child with additional needs and the parents to ensure that the Early Years Foundation Stage is delivered in the right way for the individual child. This helps us produce targets to achieve a successful outcome for the individual. Surrey county council provide a local offer for SEN which can be found at the bottom of this page.

If an additional need is identified, we will work with other agencies/professionals as appropriate and with the reports these provide, we will continue to assess and review targeted outcomes for the individual child. We do not discriminate at Peter Pan and tailor our planning to take account of all of our children’s individual needs.

When an SEN Child reaches school age we will work with the parents and the receiving school to make sure that transition goes as smoothly as possible for both the child and the parents.

Peter Pan Nursery and Forest School SEND local offer.

What is the local offer?

Our local offer is a way of providing information about all the services available for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). It will also enable families to see more clearly which services are available and how we access them at Peter Pan.

More importantly, it will provide a way for families and young people to engage more easily with services that can benefit them. Our offer will include provision we can access across education, health and social care.
